The Outer Box (Shipment Packaging)

The branded subscription box itself — usually corrugated cardboard, sometimes with a printed sleeve or sticker. This is classified as shipment packaging because it goes directly to the consumer. Report under paper and card.

Internal Fillers and Wrapping (Shipment Packaging)

  • Shredded paper or crinkle-cut fill — paper/card
  • Tissue paper wrapping products — paper/card
  • Bubble wrap or foam inserts protecting fragile items — plastic
  • Straw or excelsior fill — wood (or paper/card depending on material)

Product Packaging (Primary Packaging)

Every product inside the box has its own packaging that you must report:

  • A skincare product in a glass jar with a plastic lid and paper label
  • A bag of snacks in a plastic or foil pouch
  • A candle in a glass holder with a cardboard sleeve
  • A book in a plastic shrink wrap

If you source these products from other brands, the product packaging is still your EPR responsibility because you are the party placing it on the market to consumers.

Tracking Packaging That Changes Every Month

The biggest operational challenge for subscription box EPR compliance is that your packaging profile changes with every box. Here is a practical approach:

Create a Master Packaging Template

List the packaging elements that stay consistent across every box:

  • Outer box (same size and material each month)
  • Packing tape (same type)
  • Brand card or welcome letter (same weight)
  • Shredded paper fill (approximately the same quantity)

These form your baseline packaging — the weight you can calculate once and apply to every box.

Track Variable Elements Per Box Cycle

For each monthly box, record the product-specific packaging:

  • List every product included
  • Identify all packaging components on each product
  • Record material types and weights (from supplier spec sheets)

This is where the work is, but it only needs to be done once per box cycle — not per individual subscriber.

Calculate Total by Multiplying

Total packaging per cycle = (baseline packaging + variable packaging) x number of boxes shipped

If you ship 10,000 boxes per month, and each box contains 280g of packaging, that month’s total is 2.8 tonnes. Over a year, that is 33.6 tonnes — all reportable.

1. Standardise Where You Can

Using the same outer box size, the same fill material, and the same tape across all boxes simplifies tracking enormously. Variability in the products is unavoidable; variability in the shipping packaging is a choice.

2. Build EPR Data Into Your Curation Process

When selecting products for each month’s box, add “packaging weight by material” to your selection criteria alongside product quality, price, and brand fit. This makes data collection part of your existing workflow rather than a separate compliance task.

3. Request Packaging Data From Suppliers Upfront

Make packaging specifications a standard part of your supplier onboarding. Ask for per-component weights and material types before you commit to including a product in your box. Chasing this data after the fact is much harder.

4. Consider Packaging Optimisation

Subscription box packaging can often be lightweighted without reducing the unboxing experience. Thinner cardboard, less void fill, and lighter product cards all reduce your EPR tonnage and fees. Paper-based fill (£196/tonne) is also cheaper for EPR purposes than plastic bubble wrap (£423/tonne).

5. Plan for Fee Modulation
