Compliance Made Clear

Not every business is obligated under EPR. Two thresholds determine whether you must report and pay fees.

Turnover
£1M+

Annual turnover of £1 million or more

Packaging
25T+

Handle 25+ tonnes of packaging per year

Obligated

If your business meets both thresholds, you are an obligated producer under the Packaging Waste (Data Reporting) (England) Regulations 2023. You must report your packaging data to DEFRA and pay EPR fees. Read DEFRA's official EPR guidance for the full regulatory details. Even if you are uncertain, it is your legal responsibility to check.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about UK packaging EPR and how our platform helps.

What is packaging EPR and who does it affect?

Packaging EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) is a UK regulation requiring businesses that produce, import, or sell packaging to pay for its collection and recycling. You are obligated if your annual turnover exceeds £1 million AND you handle 25 or more tonnes of packaging per year. Both thresholds must be met. Charities are exempt.

When do I need to submit my EPR packaging data?

Large producers (turnover £2m+ and 50+ tonnes) report every 6 months — H1 data (Jan-Jun) is due by 1 October, H2 data (Jul-Dec) by 1 April. Small producers report annually with full-year data due by 1 April. Data is submitted via DEFRA's Report Packaging Data (RPD) portal.

How much do EPR fees cost per tonne?

Confirmed 2025-2026 EPR base fees per tonne are: glass £192, paper/card £196, steel £259, aluminium £266, wood £280, plastic £423, and fibre-based composite £461. From 2026-2027, fees will be modulated based on recyclability — harder-to-recycle packaging will attract higher charges.

What happens if I do not comply with packaging EPR?

The Environment Agency has powers including warning letters, compliance notices, civil penalties, variable monetary penalties, and criminal prosecution (which can carry unlimited fines). Enforcement actions are published publicly, creating reputational risk on top of financial penalties.

How does EPR Compliance help my business?

Our platform simplifies the entire EPR process. Enter your packaging data through guided forms, and we automatically calculate your obligations and generate DEFRA-ready RPD reports. We support all eight material types, all packaging categories, and both large and small producer reporting schedules — from just £29/month.

Do I need a compliance scheme or consultant for EPR?

No. Under the reformed EPR scheme, you submit your packaging data directly to DEFRA via the RPD portal. Our platform generates reports formatted exactly as DEFRA expects, so you can export and upload directly — eliminating the need for expensive consultants or compliance schemes.
