Environmental Product Declaration

A standardised document that transparently communicates the environmental performance of a product based on life cycle assessment data, following ISO 14025 standards for Type III environmental labels.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a verified, standardised document that communicates the environmental performance of a product or packaging based on Life Cycle Assessment data. EPDs follow ISO 14025 standards.

EPDs typically include:

  • Carbon footprint (global warming potential)
  • Energy consumption (renewable and non-renewable)
  • Water usage
  • Waste generation
  • Resource depletion
  • Other environmental impact categories

While EPDs are not currently required under pEPR, they are increasingly requested by B2B customers and retailers as part of sustainability commitments. EPDs provide a credible, third-party verified basis for environmental claims — avoiding greenwashing. They are particularly common in building materials but growing in packaging. Producers with EPDs can demonstrate their commitment to transparency and may benefit from preferential procurement by environmentally conscious buyers.
