Green Dot

A packaging symbol indicating the producer has contributed financially to packaging recovery in participating countries. Not a recycling symbol — it means the producer has paid into a compliance system.

The Green Dot (Der Grune Punkt) is a trademarked symbol on packaging indicating that the producer has made a financial contribution to a packaging recovery and recycling scheme. It does NOT mean the packaging is recyclable.

Key points about the Green Dot:

  • Originated in Germany and is licensed across many European countries
  • Indicates financial contribution to a national packaging scheme
  • Does NOT indicate recyclability — a common consumer misunderstanding
  • Not required in the UK but often appears on packaging sold across European markets

In the UK context, the Green Dot has no legal significance under pEPR. UK mandatory labelling will use different symbols. However, producers selling into European markets may still need to use the Green Dot. Consumer research consistently shows confusion between the Green Dot and actual recycling symbols, which is one reason the UK is moving to clearer mandatory labelling. OPRL provides the primary UK voluntary recycling labels.
