Labelling Requirements
The mandatory packaging labelling rules under pEPR requiring clear recyclability information on packaging. Aims to replace voluntary schemes with standardised, legally required recycling labels.
Labelling requirements under pEPR will mandate that all packaging carries clear, standardised recyclability information. This replaces the current voluntary approach with legally required labels.
Key aspects of mandatory labelling:
- Binary system — packaging labelled as either recyclable or not recyclable
- Based on the RAM assessment classification
- Covers all packaging components (container, lid, label)
- Must be clear and visible to consumers
- Phased introduction with transition periods
Mandatory labelling aims to reduce consumer confusion and contamination in recycling. Currently, multiple voluntary labels coexist (OPRL, Mobius loop, Tidy Man, Green Dot), confusing consumers. The new system will provide one clear message. Producers must plan for labelling changes in their packaging design timelines, particularly for long-shelf-life products. Artwork changes and print plate costs should be factored into compliance budgets.
