Brand Owner
A producer category under EPR referring to the business whose brand appears on packaging. Brand owners bear primary responsibility for the packaging placed on the market under their name.
A brand owner is one of the key activity types under EPR for packaging. The brand owner is the business whose brand name or trademark appears on the packaging of goods sold to consumers.
Brand owners are responsible for:
- Reporting all packaging placed on the UK market under their brand via RPD
- Paying waste management fees for that packaging
- Meeting modulated fee requirements based on the recyclability of their packaging
In cases where a product is manufactured by one company but sold under another company's brand (e.g., own-label supermarket products), the brand owner — not the manufacturer — is the obligated party. This ensures the business with the greatest influence over packaging design bears the cost. Brand owners should work with their supply chain to gather accurate material and weight data. See also packer/filler and importer for other activity types.
