Packaging Material
The physical material from which packaging is made. Under EPR, packaging must be classified by material type for reporting, including plastic, paper/card, glass, aluminium, steel, wood, and other materials.
Packaging material refers to the substance from which packaging is manufactured. Under pEPR, producers must report all packaging data broken down by material type, as fees and recycling targets vary by material.
The main material categories are:
- Plastic — including PET, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC, and other polymers
- Paper/card — corrugated board, cardboard, paper
- Glass — clear, green, amber/brown
- Aluminium — cans, foil, trays
- Steel — tinplate cans, drums, closures
- Wood — pallets, crates
- Fibre-based composite — lined cartons, coffee cups
- Other — textiles, ceramics, cork
Each material has different recovery and recycling targets, different base fees, and different modulated fee rates. Accurate material classification is essential for correct reporting.
