Grouped Packaging
A subcategory of secondary packaging used to create a multipack or bundle of products for sale, such as shrink wrap around a set of cans or a cardboard sleeve grouping bottles together.
Grouped packaging is a type of secondary packaging specifically used to combine multiple units into a single sellable multipack. It is the packaging that turns individual items into a grouped consumer purchase.
Examples include:
- Plastic rings or clips holding cans together
- Cardboard sleeves around multiple yoghurt pots
- Shrink wrap on a multipack of water bottles
- Cardboard carriers for beer bottles
Grouped packaging is typically taken home by the consumer, making it household packaging that is subject to waste management fees and modulated fees. The brand owner of the multipack product reports this packaging. Grouped packaging design has come under scrutiny for environmental impact — many brands are replacing plastic grouping with cardboard alternatives or developing clip and handle solutions that use less material.
