Shelf-Ready Packaging
Packaging designed so products can be placed directly onto retail shelves without unpacking, reducing in-store handling. SRP is typically secondary packaging that enters the non-household waste stream.
Shelf-ready packaging (SRP), also called retail-ready packaging (RRP), is secondary packaging designed so that products can be placed directly onto retail shelves without individual handling. The packaging serves as both transport protection and in-store display.
SRP characteristics:
- Easy opening — designed to be quickly opened or converted for shelf display
- Combined function — transit protection and retail display in one
- Typically corrugated cardboard or paper/card
- Usually removed in-store by retail staff
Under pEPR, SRP is typically non-household packaging because it is removed at the retail premises before consumers see it. However, some SRP may be taken home by consumers (e.g., small display packs), in which case it should be classified as household packaging. The brand owner or packer/filler who designs and specifies the SRP typically reports it. Clear classification is needed for accurate reporting.
