Shipment Packaging
Packaging used to deliver goods directly to consumers, particularly in e-commerce. Includes mailing boxes, padded envelopes, void fill, and protective wrapping used for online orders.
Shipment packaging is packaging used to send goods directly to consumers, predominantly through e-commerce and mail-order channels. Unlike transit packaging, shipment packaging ends up with the consumer and enters the household waste stream.
Examples include:
- Corrugated mailing boxes
- Padded and bubble-lined envelopes
- Void fill and protective materials inside the box
- Poly mailer bags
- Paper wrapping and tissue paper
Under pEPR, shipment packaging is the responsibility of the seller who dispatches the goods to the consumer. This is an important distinction — the brand owner reports the product's primary packaging, while the seller reports the shipment packaging. E-commerce businesses should carefully track and report their shipment packaging by material type and weight. With the growth of online shopping, shipment packaging represents an increasingly significant portion of household packaging waste.
