Battery Regulations

UK regulations requiring producers of batteries to fund the collection and recycling of waste batteries. Part of the wider producer responsibility framework alongside packaging EPR and WEEE.

The Battery Regulations (Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009) require producers who place batteries on the UK market to take responsibility for their end-of-life collection and recycling.

Battery producer obligations:

  • Register with the Environment Agency
  • Join a battery compliance scheme
  • Finance the collection and recycling of waste batteries
  • Meet collection rate targets
  • Report data on batteries placed on the market

Battery regulations are separate from packaging EPR but part of the same producer responsibility principle — that those who place products on the market should fund their end-of-life management. Businesses selling battery-powered products face both battery and packaging obligations. The packaging of batteries is covered by pEPR, while the batteries themselves fall under battery regulations. With the growth of electric vehicles and portable electronics, battery regulations are becoming increasingly significant. See also WEEE regulations.
