WEEE Regulations
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations requiring producers of electrical products to finance the collection, treatment, and recycling of end-of-life electronics. Separate from but related to packaging EPR.
The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations require producers of electrical and electronic products to take responsibility for end-of-life management. While separate from packaging EPR, they are part of the broader producer responsibility landscape.
WEEE obligations include:
- Registering with a WEEE compliance scheme
- Financing collection, treatment, and recycling of e-waste
- Meeting recycling and recovery targets
- Reporting data on products placed on market
Businesses that manufacture or import electrical products should consider both WEEE and packaging EPR obligations. The packaging on electrical goods is covered by pEPR, while the products themselves fall under WEEE. Many compliance schemes offer both WEEE and packaging compliance services. The Environment Agency also enforces WEEE regulations. Understanding the interaction between WEEE and packaging EPR is important for electronics producers planning their compliance strategy.
