Packaging Specification

A detailed technical document describing a packaging item's materials, weights, dimensions, and components. Maintaining accurate packaging specifications is essential for EPR data reporting accuracy.

A packaging specification is a detailed record of a packaging item's design, including every component, its material, weight, and dimensions. Accurate specifications are the foundation of reliable EPR data.

A comprehensive packaging specification should include:

  • Each component — container, closure, label, seal, etc.
  • Material type — specific material for each component (e.g., rPET, HDPE, PP)
  • Weight — individual weight of each component
  • Dimensions — size and volume
  • Recycled content — percentage for each component
  • Packaging class — primary, secondary, transit

Producers should maintain a packaging specification database and update it whenever packaging changes. This data feeds directly into RPD reporting. Inaccurate specifications lead to incorrect data submissions and wrong fee calculations. Regular specification reviews also identify opportunities for eco-design improvements and lightweighting.
