Single-Use Packaging
Packaging designed to be used once before being discarded. Subject to increasing regulatory pressure and higher EPR costs, driving interest in reusable packaging alternatives.
Single-use packaging is packaging intended for one use before disposal. The vast majority of consumer packaging — bottles, cartons, wraps, trays, pouches — falls into this category.
Regulatory pressure on single-use packaging:
- pEPR makes producers pay the full net cost of managing single-use packaging waste
- The Plastic Packaging Tax targets single-use plastic packaging with low recycled content
- Bans on specific items (e.g., plastic straws, stirrers, cotton buds)
- Growing consumer demand for alternatives
The waste hierarchy places reuse above recycling, suggesting that reusable packaging systems should be preferred where practical. However, reusable systems involve different logistics, cleaning infrastructure, and consumer behaviour challenges. Under modulated fees, single-use packaging that is widely recyclable will cost less than non-recyclable single-use items. Producers should assess where reusable alternatives might work in their product categories.
